Sherwood plays an active role in the local community, we support grass roots cricket coaching in local primary and secondary schools as part of the Cricket Foundation’s Charity – Chance to Shine, delivering  over 300 hours of coaching per year to in excess of 300 children, part of a 5-year cricket sustainability programme. This includes both curriculum coaching and organising after-school training sessions leading up to supporting the schools that enter the Medway Mini-Youth games. Additionally, we provide those that want to play competitive cricket an exit route to the club where they can join one of our Youth teams.

The Youth integration program is police led and uses a partnership approach to tackling antisocial behaviour and integration issues in the community. This program aims to provide youths from disadvantaged backgrounds, those disengaged from education, and youths from hidden communities the opportunity to steer spare time towards a more positive and productive outcome. Sherwood cricket club are working with the police to help deliver the program by providing the youths with eight hours of cricket coaching. Those young people that respond well to the cricket, show a particular talent, or simply enjoy the sport will then be introduced to the club on a full time basis.

In 2013 Sherwood Cricket Club announced a partnership with Cricket Cub and Friends. Under the programme Sherwood and Cricket Cub’s will work together to deliver grass roots cricket coaching to girls and boys aged 2-7. Cricket Cubs and Friends the scheme is beginning its’ second year with kids as young as two encouraged to come along and be part of cricket for the very first time. Teaching the basics of cricket to both boys and girls, Cricket Cubs is all about kids having fun whilst learning new skills.

Combining soft play and kwik cricket skills, Cricket Cubs uses skills to suit the younger player with easy to remember techniques and reaches out to children of all abilities and to both sexes.Sherwood will be running indoor development sessions starting in the New Year and continuing all the way through to the start of the season; when the young cubs will start practising outside on the cricket clubs main pitch.

In 2010, Sherwood was the only club in Kent to host the ECB and British Army “Be the Best” event. The event was organised for local secondary school students to gain an understanding of the careers offered by the British Army and to have some fun playing cricket and being coached by qualified cricket coaches. The two-day event included nearly 500 students across 4 secondary schools taking part in numerous activities including rifle BB gun shooting, building work, assault courses, inflatable relay races and army drills. It was a great success even with the despicable weather conditions. We would like to thank the British Army and ECB for the fun days had by all.

In 2015, Sherwood entered into a long-term partnership with MidKent College to help students gain valuable life skills and on-the-job training in the areas of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, bricklaying, painting and decorating. The initial project was funded by the ECB/Jewson fund, projects including installing CCTV and Fire Alarm system, PAT testing, building storage cupboards, replacing emergency lighting, shower heads and updating toilet facilities, in addition to general repairs and painting the entire clubhouse.
